An ABR® and Your Commitment to Home Buyers

ABR Designation and Career in Real Estate

In today's real estate climate, making the decision to earn an Accredited Buyer's Representative (ABR®) designation may be just the thing you need to stake your claim as a local real estate market expert.

While most real estate agents can represent the buyer in a home purchase, not all agents have the education, experience and dedication to earn an ABR® designation.

An ABR® designation is designed for real estate buyer agents whose expertise targets buyer representation.  By completing advanced educational classes and demonstrating proven experience in buyer-client transactions, colleagues and clients understand your commitment to providing outstanding service for real estate buyers.

Benefits for the Home Buyer

When a home buyer searches for a qualified real estate agent to represent them, they are searching for an advocate who will be dedicated to serving only their best interests—not that of the sellers.

When you earn an ABR® designation, you are telling home buyers that you've gone that extra mile with additional training and experience to serve them. An ABR® provides the highest level of buyer-representation services to their clients throughout the home buying process.

Benefits for the Real Estate Agent

There are over 2 million people licensed to sell real estate in the United States. With so much competition in today's real estate market,  real estate agents are discovering specializing in buyer representation is a great way to establish and grow their real estate careers.

Studies have shown REALTORS® with the ABR® designation stand to earn as much as twice that of agents without a designation and 95 percent of home buyers say that they highly value that agent's knowledge.

Reasons to Earn Your ABR®

  • Build Your Credibility
When you focus your real estate business on one type of customer, the home buyer, you gain a reputation as the local expert for home buyers in your community.
  • Build a Referral Network in Your Local Market
You can build a referral network among listing agents by becoming an ABR®. They see you as an ally and not their competitor. Home buyers view you as having the "inside scoop" on the available housing inventory because of your referral network.
  • Become the Buyer's Advocate
Become your client's advocate by using your skills to search for homes beyond traditional MLS services and opening a wider range of options for your clients.
  • Do It Because You Love It
As an ABR®, you are helping your client achieve the American dream of owning a home. You have the opportunity to make their real estate experience an enjoyable one.

How to Earn Your ABR® Designation

The ABR® idesignation is given by the Real Estate Buyer's Agent Council (REBAC), an affiliate of the National Association of REALTORS®, to real estate professionals who meet the specified educational andexperience criteria. To obtain and use the ABR® designation, a REALTOR® must complete all four requirements:

  1. Show to have successfully completed five transactions where they solely represented the home buyer
  2. Complete two courses, including the Accredited Buyer's Representative (ABR®) Designation Course, including an 80 percent passing grade on the exam.
  3. Complete one of the ABR® elective courses, including an 80 percent passing grade on the exam
  4. Maintain active and good membership status in the Real Estate Buyer's Agent Council (REBAC) and the National Association of REALTORS®.
