Avoid Mistakes Successful Real Estate Career

A career in real estate offers a flexible work schedule, the ability to be your own boss and unlimited earning potential; however, becoming a real estate agent does not come without risk.  To catapult your career, it's wise to know where potential hurdles may be hiding.  Here are six common mistakes real estate agents make with tips on how to avoid them.

1. Saying "Yes" Too Often

No matter how successful you are, you can't be everything for everyone. There will be clients and listings that are not a good fit for your skill set. You need to learn to say "yes" to those clients and listings that you feel you can have success with, and "no" to those clients who appear overbearing and the listings that just will not sell.

2. Failing to Connect

Today's real estate agent is going to use technology to stay ahead of the game, but one problem found with too much technology is a lack of connection with the people in the industry. All of the networking and contact building tools at your disposal are great, but only if you use them to actually connect with and build relationships with people. Learn to identify with and relate to people, and your business will grow.

3. Being Too General

If you focus your real estate efforts too generally, then you end up in a situation where, quite literally, everyone is a potential client. This makes it nearly impossible to focus your efforts on building the right relationships with people. Instead, decide where your specialization will lie, and use that information to pick a target audience. Whether you specialize in helping people downsize, buying and selling luxury estates or working with first-time buyers, your specialization will help you focus your lead generating efforts more efficiently and effectively.

4. Not Continuing to Learn

In real estate, you can never "know it all." Things change almost daily, and you need to commit to continuing to learn. In fact, a skilled real estate agent will learn something new every single day that they can use to make their business more effective.

5. Failing to Communicate

Your buyers and sellers want to hear from you. If you don't communicate effectively, they are going to wonder if you are putting forth the necessary effort to effectively sell their houses or negotiate their purchases. Make sure you communicate often, and outline how and when you will communicate with your clients so they know what to expect. Set boundaries, but make sure you are offering up as much information as you can to keep them informed.

6. Insufficient Start-Up Funding

It costs money to start a business, and careers in real estate are no exception. You need to plan for that funding before you launch your career, so you can put forth the image of a real estate agent who is worth hiring. Also, it is a good idea to have some reserve savings for those months when you do not have many sales or clients while you are just starting out.
