7 ways new agents get listings

As a newly licensed real estate agent, you may find it a challenge when it comes to getting your first listing.  You've invested a whole lot of time and money taking all the classes, passing the licensing exam and landing a spot with your "dream" broker.  Our team at BHHS Homesale Realty has put their heads together to provide you with these seven tips to help you get your first listing.

  1. Build your list of potential clients.  Start with people you know--family, friends and colleagues—and build your list from there.  Add neighbors, acquaintances from the gym, church or school.  Let them know you're starting a career as a real estate agent and are open to working with new clients.  Odds are they will know someone who is selling a house and will be glad to help you.
  2. Work floor duty whenever possible.  By working floor duty, you have the opportunity to convert callers and walk-in visitors from prospects to clients.   Be friendly and helpful when you answer questions and provide useful information and resources to enhance your credibility and expertise.  It's your chance win new clients.
  3. Become the expert in your market.  Stay on top of your market by reading about what is happening in your community and being active on social media.  Build relationships within your selected market area.  Pay attention to new subdivisions, area home buying reports and other local real estate news.
  4. Continue your training and education.  Make the most of every opportunity for training your broker might offer.  Further your education by obtaining additional credentials like a Certified Residential Specialist (CRS) or Graduate REALTOR® Institute (GRI) designations.  Having these designations might aid you in getting listing referrals from other real estate agents outside of your area.
  5. Build an online presence.  Build a modern-looking website that puts you and your real estate business in a great light.  A professional website will help build your reputation and brand.  Make sure it is easy to navigate and has high quality images and text.  Search engine rankings, website traffic and leads can increase with a strong online presence.
  6. Work with a mentor.  This might be one of the most important tips for new real estate agent.  Find an experienced REALTOR® from your office that will work with you to understand your area and guide you through the listing process.
  7. Always say thank you.  Always write a special thank you note to people that have referred your services to others.  This will help reinforce how much you appreciate their help in in getting your real estate business started.
Landing your first real estate listing may be no small task, but if you incorporate some of these suggestions into your daily practice, you'll build a solid business in no time.  Contact BHHS Homesale Realty to learn more about joining one of our Maryland or Pennsylvania real estate offices.
