Market to Millennial Buyers
Millennials are the single biggest generational group--in today's housing market, workforce, and the economy in general. When you join BHHS Homesale Realty, you'll have the opportunity to learn everything there is to know about marketing to this dynamic group.

Unfortunately, many real estate agents still harbor some major misconceptions about Millennials.

You can't go far in today's online world without finding a breathless think-piece all about the Millennials and what industries they're "killing" next. Luckily, research has shown that nearly 90 percent of Millennials are interested in using a real estate agent during their house hunt.

So, first things first--Millennials aren't the enemy! Especially not for a savvy real estate pro!

With that out of the way, it's easier to understand this group of buyers and how they fit into your business.

What is a Millennial?

Generational divides are notoriously fluid. Perhaps no other group in recent history has changed definitions as much as the Millennial. Now, however, experts are coming to a general consensus that Millennials are those born between 1980 and 1998.

You might notice something interesting: The oldest of these are well into their careers, while the youngest are still in college. Members of the generation have actually grown up in completely different worlds, especially as it relates to technology.

While "Oregon Trail Millennials" born before 1990 mostly had limited exposure to computers growing up, those under age 30 are digital natives. Those in their mid-20's and younger have always lived in a mobile-first digital world with cell phone in hand.

What Drives Millennial Thinking?

Older Millennials--those predominantly entering the housing market today--were profoundly impacted by the Great Recession. Many were forced to revise their expectations of job security and stability far, far downward. They may have had several jobs before finding a niche.

Millions lost years of buying power in situations that forced them to move back in with parents.

As a result, major life milestones such as starting a family (and buying a home!) are coming later. Although Millennials are naturally distrustful of many institutions, including lenders, many millions of them now consider a home to be a strong investment again.

Because of their shared experiences, many Millennials:

  • Are disdainful of being sold to, but will thoroughly research before buying anything.
  • Have limited opportunities in traditional lending.
  • Prefer a sales process that is highly interactive, visual, online-first, and "authentic."
  • Tend to look at comparisons and reviews before choosing any professional service.

How to Break Through and Connect with Millennials

The most important rule of connecting with Millennials is to be where they are.

Marketing techniques that work with Millennial clients include:

  • Start a Blog
Blogs are how professionals demonstrate their leadership. By posting content that informs and educates potential clients, you establish trust while helping them figure out their buying criteria.

  • Get on Social Media
Millennials are highly represented on Facebook and Twitter. Plus, these platforms can give you a lot of visibility into potential homebuyers in your market. Be part of the online conversation!

  • Live Stream
Video content is convenient and compelling for Millennials--and, increasingly, for older buyers as well. Live streaming provides an unparalleled view of an open house and shows transparency.

At BHHS Homesale Realty, we train our real estate agents to be fluent in the latest technology. Not only does this help you attract more business from Millennials, but it also automates away much of the busywork that can take your focus away from the big picture!
