Time Blocking - BHHS Homesale Realty Careers

It can seem like there's never enough time in the day and this feeling is especially true for those working in the real estate industry. The experts at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Homesale Realty understand this and have created a guide to help you successfully schedule your time.

  • Step 1: Stop & Breathe
Between professional duties, personal obligations and the ups and downs that each week brings, quite frankly there really aren't enough hours in the day to accomplish all of your ambitions. But that's okay! Scheduling success starts by realizing that you have to prioritize your many responsibilities to ensure you're achieving your goals with quality and consistency.

  • Step 2: Define Your Priorities
This step may be tricky at first. After all, aren't all of your responsibilities as a real estate agent considered a priority? Yes and no. While you should strive to perform at your highest level for your agency and clients, you also need to direct your time and energy into the right areas at the right times. In other words, it's more important to accomplish quality work than it is to merely complete mediocre work at a high quantity. Identify the roles and responsibilities that have the most impact, shortest deadlines and require the most effort — then you can start determining the best ways to accomplish them.

  • Step 3: Become a Time Blocker
Time blocking is a real estate agent's best friend. This involves a detailed allocation of time to certain daily, weekly or monthly tasks. Instead of creating a simple to-do list, time blocking organizes your work into a prioritized schedule that keeps you accountable and focused. In other words, it's a roadmap that guides you to success. For it to be effective, however, you need to protect it from distractions or other hindrances.

  • Step 4: Say Goodbye to Multitasking
Multitasking is tempting for real estate agents. Unfortunately, multitasking can actually result in accomplishing less work. When your focus is pulled in competing directions, you're never truly devoting your knowledge, skills, or time to either task. In fact, you may be surprised to discover that when you effectively time block your schedule and don't attempt to multitask, you'll accomplish quality work in less time — and more importantly — with less stress!

4 Time Blocking Tips for Agents

  1. Start your day off right!
Don't immediately check emails or hit the snooze button. Give yourself time to calmly wake up, enjoy breakfast and spend a little time thinking about nothing but yourself.

  2. Get the difficult tasks out of the way first
Start your daily time block off with an unappealing task. Contact a set number of potential leads early so you can free yourself for the easier tasks throughout the day.

  3. Don't take on too much
It's okay to say no to extra work. The worst thing you can do to your time block is to cram a task into each individual minute.

  4. Accept your success
Even if you follow your time block, sometimes you just won't be able to accomplish quite as much as you'd prefer. That's okay! Be proud of what you have achieved and take the deserved time to focus on your personal life when your work is finished for the day.
