Safety First - New Real Estate Agents - BHHS Homesale Careers

Safety is a serious concern for any real estate agent. Whether you are new to the industry or have years of experience, it is something you should never overlook. Recent challenges with public health and safety are among the reasons why Homesale Realty emphasizes this in our training.

Developing the right safety skills is important, and reviewing safety practices from time to time can also be helpful. No matter how nice a neighborhood is, it is crucial to stay aware of yourself and the environment.

Luckily, it only takes a few minutes to do the right thing when it comes to safety. That gives you the peace of mind you need to deliver excellence. Here are five essential ways to turn safety skills into effective habits.

  1. Let the Client Lead
Whenever you are walking through a property, let the client lead – especially when it comes to moving from room to room. Be alert to your surroundings and possible exits. Aim to conduct all of your business in broad daylight, but remember – dangerous behavior can happen any time. The most desirable neighborhoods for clients are also on thieves' radar, so don't let an area's reputation create a false sense of security.

  2. Equip Yourself for Self-Defense
Many real estate agents choose to bring self-defense tools with them while in the field. Remember that, while virtually every state affords you multiple self-defense options, the laws vary from place to place. Pepper spray is a common deterrent in some areas, for example, but may be unlawful in others. Whatever you choose, be sure you are practiced and comfortable with your weapon and always carry it in the same place.

  3. Make Sure Others Know Where You Are
Colleagues and family should be aware of your schedule and where you are at all times. This ensures someone is able to follow up if you are delayed coming back for any reason. Keeping others informed regularly is best – don't wait until you are concerned about a particular area or client. If you use a smartphone or tablet, you can share your location with a partner or other trusted person, enabling them to act fast in a crisis.

  4. Use Modern Safety Apps
Speaking of technology, it can also be very effective in keeping you safe. No matter what platform you use, odds are you can find dozens of relevant safety apps. Focus on using just one and doing it consistently. Look for software that has been around for years, with good reviews and plenty of users. Insist on an option with a GPS locator to help others track your location and a "panic button" to contact others who can summon help.

  5. Consider Self-Defense Classes
Self-defense classes aren't just about stopping an attacker. They also help to give you the confidence you need to react to a dangerous situation. Under extreme stress, freezing up is the last thing you want! Start early with training so you have the skills when you need them. Look for self-defense professionals whose background is compatible with your needs and who have a strong emphasis on safety.
