Whether your first impression is made online or in person, it is the key to developing a strong customer relationship. One reason why Homesale Realty members land more clients is because of their ability to put their best foot forward from the very beginning.
And one important way to do that is by dressing for success.
In some fields, there's nothing wrong with wearing jeans and a t-shirt. That's fine for them. But clients have a certain image in mind when they think of a real estate agent, and you'll be able to relate to them more easily if you match their expectations. That includes being well-dressed.
Everyone knows that successful real estate agents are very well compensated. When you walk into a beautiful new home with a client, you should look completely at ease in your surroundings. For most professionals, that means getting familiar with a certain standard of attire.
Your clothing can help you look like someone who is in demand and commands respect. Sometimes, that can even help you feel better and more confident. But real estate agents come from so many backgrounds you might not have any experience with the real estate "dress code."
When you're planning out your wardrobe, it's vital to dress for the occasion:
- City vs. Rural
In some rural communities, dressing in boots, jeans, and other country accouterments can be a mark of authenticity. Look around you at what your prospective customers are comfortable with and match it if it fits your personal style. In urban locales, there is a tendency to dress in more conservative business fashion. If you are involved with luxury properties, consider a tailored suit or a touch of jewelry.
- Vacation Destinations
If you're working at a "getaway" location or closely involved with buyers who want vacation homes, it's okay to dress with ease in mind. You should also add a little flair to communicate your own personal style. The more relaxed you feel, the more you'll project the air of leisure you need. For some, that might mean turning in common accessories like the necktie in favor of more practical fashion choices.
- Meeting a Lead
Meeting a prospective client in person for the first time usually calls for business attire. It's even more helpful if they've seen a video introduction on your website where you're dressed smartly and fashionably. Men should favor a suit or dress slacks and a jacket. Women can choose a suit (pants or skirt) or a conservative dress with jacket; be sure to coordinate the right shoes and hosiery.
- Meeting an Existing Client
If it suits your style, it is okay to ease back a little bit with an existing client who knows and trusts you. This usually looks like "business casual." For men, that's a collared shirt and suit pants, with blazer and belt optional. For women, a collared blouse, optional blazer, and skirt or pants. Always go with closed-toe shoes unless you are working on and around the beach, where the rules on sandals are different.
Your Attire Is a Big Part of the Story—But Not the Whole Story
Be sure to extend the neat and tidy appearance of your clothes to the rest of your environment, too. If someone is coming to meet you in your office, make certain it looks organized and professional, leaving nothing out of place. If your client is likely to see your car, sort out the interior and consider visiting a car wash (wax optional) on your way to the meeting.
