Mastering Time Management: Essential Strategies for Agents

No matter your professional aspirations, time management is one of the most important skills you can develop. It is the bedrock of success across virtually all industries. It's one of the best places to focus your attention early in your career. The sooner you start, the more time you'll save, with compounding results. One reason why Homesale Realty agents are so effective is our ability to get more done in less time. Managing your time better isn't something that happens overnight, and you might have to try several different methods before you notice a significant difference. Still, the effort is worth it.

Let's take a look at some of the most effective time management strategies in real estate:

  • Identify What's Important
In general, daily tasks fall into four categories: Important and urgent, important but not urgent, not important but urgent, and both unimportant and not urgent. Do away with unimportant tasks as much as possible. Schedule "important but not urgent" tasks so they aren't forgotten, even as you tackle "important and urgent" ones first. That way, you'll make time to learn new skills that might otherwise slip down the priority list.

  • Write Your To-Do List the Night Before
While the average person writes a to-do list in the morning, many real estate professionals find it considerably easier to do the work the night before, after all of the current day's tasks are set aside. This way, you will have the clarity to think ahead to what matters most. Plus, you can build momentum immediately by jumping into your most important tasks as soon as you finish your morning routine.

  • Automate Real Estate Marketing
Marketing consistently to your leads and past customers is essential to growing your real estate practice. These days, you can entrust a great deal to automated marketing software without sacrificing quality. For example, it's now easier than ever to set up an email marketing campaign that provides helpful, informative content to each new list subscriber every week, deepening relationships over time after a modest setup period.

  • Work in Focused Blocks of Time
Real estate agents are most likely to close an agreement with a new customer when they respond to an initial inquiry in five minutes or less. Still, you can't be at the mercy of your phone all day! Work in focused blocks of time where you dive into a single task as deeply as possible. Eliminate distractions, including notifications, and try to get used to not even looking up from a task until you've committed 15-20 minutes of effort.

  • Review What Works for You
Take some time to review the previous week and determine what was most effective for you each week. For instance, if you had terrific results from an open house, scheduling more of them in the future may make sense even though it's a high-touch and time-intensive approach. Jotting down a few quick notes at the end of every day can help you remember details so you can prioritize with even greater clarity next week.

  • Trade Strategies with Peers and Mentors
As part of BHHS Homesale Realty, you'll have a unique opportunity to collaborate with peers and experienced real estate mentors. Having an open conversation with someone who's been where you are is often the fastest way to sift through all the different time management strategies in real estate and find the ones that will do you the most good the soonest.
